This seems to occur in a lot of anime, but these two ring in my mind the most when I think of sucky endings. It seems that the creators work so hard to build a killer storyline that there is no possible chance of creating an ending worthy enough to match up with the series. It's interesting in both cases they didn't go with the cliche super happy ending everyone gets a hug type of ending and for that I applaud them, but it seems that they were just so exhausted with creating everything they let the intern finish up the series.
Okay, so the FMA ending wasn't that bad, but it just left things too wide open for me. I haven't seen the movie so maybe it patches everything up and if that's the case then take FMA out of this topic.

Wait...Evangelion HAD bad ending, then they rewrote it with Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion. I know they shouldn't have come to that, but at least that made up for the ending for anyone watching it now. That ending at least to me wasn't that bad. It made sense for the show that they made.
The movie for FMA does patch up most things and should be watched for all fans of FMA. I was waiting for the movie though. Not that the ending for the series sucked. It just was to my mind normal for a lot of animes.
The worst ending for an anime I have ever watched however was Samurai Deeper Kyo. So much so that I regretted watching the ending and would have prefered that I left the last episode hanging. That how bad it was.

Yeah, I figured someone would bring up Rebirth and End, but you are right that it shouldn't have even come to that. Not like those come out immediately after the series so many fans were just left hanging with jaws on the floor.

There's actually some history behind the really weird first ending. Apparently the studio didn't allow the creator to use his "real" ending so he created those weird ass episodes as a way to spite the studio. Although you have to admit that the second ending was pretty weird despite this.

I watched these animes a wild ago, and don't really know all the details of the ending... but one thing is sure the Evangelion had a really confusing ending... i don't know how to explain, it just didnot make any sense at the end of the series...
As for FMA it was much better than Evangelion, but things seems really open....

I haven't seen the FMA ending, but I know that the original Evangelion ending made me super sad and left me wanting. I blitzed through the entire series in one sitting. Luckily I had the Death and Rebirth handy at the end or I would have cried.

I agree with everyone that the end of the Evangelion Anime is pretty disappointing.
However, knowing what I do know today, I prefer the ending of the FMA Anime, more than the movie's. Even though things were left a bit open in the first one, the method they used to conclude things in the movie felt too "forced".
