Has anyone else here been watching the "idol-esque" contest to find the next Danny and Sandy for the Broadway production of Grease?

I love it!

Also, any other folks here love musicals in general? I'm done a couple and I love going to see them.

I loved the movie Grease. Funny thing with movie musicals is I'm always filled with anticipatory dread before watching them but typically end up thinking they were great. Thought I'd hate Chicago. Loved it. Thought I'd fall asleep watching Moulin Rouge!. Thought it was brilliant.

I also have a soft spot for Grease 2 and the Rocky Horror Picture Show might be my favorite movie musical.

So what musicals have you been in? I've only seen Guys and Dolls on stage but have always wanted to watch Sweeney Todd. Now that Tim Buton and Johnny Depp are making the movie I'll probably see it on scene before I see it on stage.

I've never much liked Grease 2 myself.

As for "been in" my favorite 2, out of I don't know how many I've been in would have to have been Les Miserables and Bye Bye Birdie.

Yeah Grease 2 is not a good movie by any stretch but it's got nostalgic value for me which trumps the merits of its artistic value.

Les Miserables is a play I'd love to see. Not familiar with Bye Bye Birdie other than recognizing the name.

You can see it on video and it's pretty good... I played the part that Dick VanDyke plays in the '63 film (Albert Peterson)... although I feel that musicals are still better on stage.

I'll have to check that out, consider it on my Netflix queue. Thanks RightOn... I don't realy feel like I have the knowldge or expertise to say but I'd agree a staged musical is probably a better than its movie incarnation. A more interactive and dynamic expereince but again I'm no expert. Maybe something along the lines of how people typically claim the book is better than the movie version.

As a Big Gay from the old school, I love musicals (my poor sad boyfriend doesn't) and have seen some wonderful shows over the years. I can't sing, can't dance and can't act--so that may also be part of what draws me to them.

Some of my favourites have been: Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, The Gospel at Colonus, Hairspray, Chicago, Ragtime, Once on this Island, The Lion King and A Chorus Line. Chicago's Steppenwolf Theater did a brilliant version of The Grapes of Wrath, which made it's way to Broadway. It was more a play with music than a musical per se, but there was a lot of music and it was beautifully done.

For me, one big advantage of dating a South Asian man is...Bollywood movies!

LOL

I think I was one of the ONLY straight guys in High School that new several hundred show tunes ;)

Heh. David is the man! I guess I am a Big Gay from the New School. :)

I love Grease! And I heart Olivia Newton-John! (see below)

Brian, ONJ and I

I've been watching the show and it's fun! I didn't see the most recent one yet, we were watching the Grammys. So I'll have to catch up tonight.

Wicked, Guys and Dolls and Rent are my favorites.

Oh I so can't get enough of this show. I absolutely love Grease and I've see it on broadway, love the movies, have the soundtrack...yea ok I'll stop now.

This is one of the only shows that everyone in my family can all agree on, so we watch it together. I'll totally be checking out the new broadway show when they pick the new Danny and Sandy.

I just hope the "America" that's voting is picking for BROADWAY talent and not "Pop Star" talent because there is a HUH-YOOOGE difference.
