Two fairly awesome older movies.

The old "Romeo and Juliet" from back in my parent's day, directed by Franco Zeffirelli.

Another older movie which is of that genre sort of, I thought was excellent, was "The Year of Living Dangerously".

I enjoy movies like The Notebook or Love Story, but they're so sad... while romantic, I really can't get into them because it just breaks my heart. Along those lines, I have to say that Dirty Dancing is one of my favorite romances of all time. I think it's all summed up by saying "Nobody puts Baby in the corner!"

I really like love stories, but not romantic movies. I can't get enough of the ups and downs (mostly downs) of Tony Soprano's marriage.

My girlfriend hates The Notebook and everytime we see a book by that author, she must point it out in disdain.

1. Amelie has the top spot for now for its quirkiness, humour, beauty, idealism, and pure joy. And come on, it's in France. Ah, c'est l'amour!

2. Before Sunrise and Before Sunset for those who want something simultaneously intelligent, adult, realistic, yet romantic. Yes, also features a Frenchwoman, haha. At least both films are in English. Please watch both! I actually find the sequel better than the first!

3. And then for those who want to remember young love, first loves: 2005's Peter Pan. Seriously.

@liza: The only problem with "Love Story" is the sack of crap line "Love means never having to say you're sorry". Anyone who's been in any long term relationship knows that love means ALWAYS having to say you're sorry. For everything. All the time. Sometimes for no apparent reason.

(I'm only half joking here. You don't have to do it all the time, but Love *DOES* mean you have to say "I'm Sorry" once in a while, more often than most people would like (and would know about by watching this movie), by both members in the relationship. This goes for every type of love (eros, agape, etc.) People who won't don't say "I'm Sorry" usually don't end up loving each other for too long.)

That aside, I'll go with "Princes Bride" for favorite romantic movie, mostly because it's romantic without being a chick flick. A close second is the newer version of "Romeo and Juliet" (the one with Leo and Claire).

Mine is Tini zabutykh predkiv (Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors), a love story about peasants in medieval Romania.

Seriously, I saw this ten years ago and I'm still blown away. Check it out.
