Been a Joe Rogan fan since the late 90's and I highly doubt he would just make something like this up. Him and Mencia have been going back and forth at each other on radio shows and such for quite a while now. I always knew it would erupt one day.
So far, since the video made it's way around the internet:
* Carlos Mencia has had the original video taken off YouTube and the original uploader had his account deleted
* Joe Rogan got banned from the comedy store
* Joe Rogan got a call from his agent (who also represents Carlos) who said that Carlos is demanding an apology. If there's no apology, Carlos wants Joe to be dropped by the agency - or he leaves. Joe said it's been fun working with them and hung up.
From Joe Rogan's blog:
Now can you IMAGINE if I was a young, struggling comic and all this shit went down? THAT is the really ugly part of it.
Now you know why people don't speak up about this shit.
I've always hated Carlos, he's just not funny. I might get some shit for this, but I think he and Dane Cook are in the same boat -- neither of them come up with particularly funny material, they just perform mediocre material in a very goofy way with lots of physical overexaggerations so it makes it seem funnier than it actually is.
I might get some shit for this, but I think he and Dane Cook are in the same boat
Funny enough, Dane Cook has also been accused of stealing material. There's a clip of some Louis CK stuff matched up to a couple bits of Dane Cook's material floating around the internet.
Early in my career as a developer, I called out any and everyone I found ripping other designers or developers work, I got a LOT of shit thrown back at me because of it. It's a lot like what Joe is saying about comedy, people ignore it and pretend it doesn't happen, or make excuses for those who do it. The righteous become the enemy.
So needless to say I've gotten to the point where I only go after copyright infringers I can actually stop, and I do it quietly as possible, well with a couple of exceptions last year ;)
In any case piracy of others creative works is BS. I stopped liking Dane Cook after I saw those videos of him stealing from Louis CK (one of my favs, much to my wife's chagrin). Never been fond of Mencia, it's all contrived and boring, imo.
I worked at the Improve for a number of years and I have seen comics using the same material too often for my tastes. I don't like Mencia. Rogan is teh bomb!
RightOn - Carlin is one of the best ever. (I even have several of his LP's.) :]
I can't say I have ever seen Rogan do a performance at all. For years I simply thought he was just the Fear Factor guy. I tried Mencia once, wasn't feeling him. George Lopez though, now that's a funny man. Mencia rests on his ability to rip on all races too much. It's funny every once in a while, but your whole skit every single time can't be based around it.
but this is the thing. there are plenty of catch phrase, little jokes, & funny bits that I have come up with only to call a friend & have him tell it to me. and I never performed it for anyone.
it seems there are some things that are in the collective consciousness that more than one person may author at any given time. THAT is not stealing - that is life.
so how do we know if someone steals or actually came up with it at the same time or independently of someone else?
some jokes are just such simple hack jokes that anyone could write them...
I can't really make a judgment since I haven't seen any of Rogan's material, but I've heard that about Mencia. I've also heard it about Dane Cook. I guess the only people that know the truth are them.
I'm not a fan of Chappelle. I love Carlin and I enjoy Lewis Black.
People have mentioned not hearing Joe Rogan's material and this-and-that about Joe Rogan, but that's not really the issue here. The issue is some dude is a thief.
elcid I see what you mean... but when it comes down to the bit being so similar that he is even mimicing the hand motions, then it's different in my eyes.

Well they have. The stuff about him stealing George Lopez's stuff has come up before. Difference is, Lopez has a pretty passive personality.
I'm also a big Rogan fan. He's not only a funny guy, he's really intelligent.

I don't find Joe all that funny. I've seen his spots, seen his shtick and I just don't laugh.
I find Mencia to be a riot. I also like George Carlin but I personally think Carlin is LEAGUES ahead of any of these guys (mencia, cook, and rogan).

Id say Cook & Mencia are in the same boat. Hilarious the first time, after that not so great.

I've never found either of them all that funny (though Rogan definitely has the edge). That said, the evidence is pretty clear. Mencia = Menstealia.
