Hi everyone,
I need some quick help from everyone. As many of you know, I'm a teacher at a high school and towards the end of a project dealing with San Francisco, we're going to be dipping our toes into the entertainment, gossip, celebrities, etc. mud pile.
The problem is: Who is a) a celebrity (also a lesser known one in the US/outside of the US) and b) either from San Francisco or at least somewhat (directly or indirectly) connected to the city?
We're not looking for sports celebrities (another group seems to have a good grip on this one) but the ones from the film, music, theater, etc. field(s) of work. Anything goes, really, but try to keep the adult film industry and other more shady things out of this thread.
Can you help out with some brief note (name, profession) and/or a link? Next week, I'm going to send a link to this note to the group which has to do the research on this topic and I'm sure they'll be happy about any pointers they can find here.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Not so Obscure:
Nancy Pelosi -- Speaker of the House
Diane Finestien (sp?) -- US Senator
Somewhat more obscure:
The Getty Family -- Richer than God
Renee Flemming -- Opera Singer
Michael Tilton Thomas -- Conductor
Note that Steve Jobs lives in Palo Alto and not SF. Same goes for Clint Eastwood (Carmel). Does that matter to you?
If you want clebs outside of SF: Every High Tech Founder, Don Valentine / Mike Moritz -- Sequoia VCs (Cisco/Yahoo/Google/among other companies), Larry Sonsini -- Lawyer to the High Tech stars, Robert Mondolvi (sp?) -- winemaker, etc.
Also, are you looking for living or dead? Jerry G. is dead. Jack London is way dead. Same with Robert Frost.

Hi everyone,
thanks for the great names so far. I'm looking for both dead/alive celebrities, San Francisco/Bay Area.
Again, thanks, and keep 'em coming (if there are more).

To Discovery Channel viewers, the hosts of the show MythBusters could be called SF celebrities - the show is based there at Jamie Hyneman's M5 Industries and uses mostly local locations. For any kind of professional engagement you'd probably go through the production company, Beyond Productions.

There's a thriving writing community in San Francisco -- Daniel Handler (he of Lemony Snickett fame) and Michael Chabon (who wrote the Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay) being only two.
You might want to check out the 826 Valencia website: http://www.826valencia.org/ to see more -- there are lots of interesting things for high school students on that site.
Also interesting is the film noir San Francisco -- your students might enjoy knowing more about Alfred Hitchcock's use of the city as a setting for movies like the Maltese Falcon and Vertigo.

Mark Twain lived in Northern California and San Francisco for 3 and 1/2 years as a journalist.
In reference to the above, Alfred Hitchcock actually made the film Vertigo in order to showcase the beatiful city after having fell in love with it on a visit several years prior to making the film.
Sean Penn and Robin Wright-Penn live in Marin County.
Joe Dimaggio was born in Martinez, CA in the bay area and was twice married in the city proper including his elopement with Marylin Monroe. He also played minor league ball for the San Francisco Seals before being sold to the New York Yankees. He makes his final resting place in Colma,CA at Holy Cross Cemetary.
