This is my first highly anticipated movie of 2007. I know you can't go by trailers anymore, but everything just looks to awesome with this movie to ignore. The fact that it is based off of a Frank Miller graphic novel gives it extra props in my book especially with what was done with Sin City (one of my top 5 favorite movies).
Here are the trailers for 300.

I can't wait to see this. It's on iMax too, so I'd like to catch it there if I can.

Frank Miller is my most favorite comic writer ever and everything I read about this movie says it's pretty much a panel by panel adaptation of the 300 graphic novel, so yeah I'll be seeing it fo sho.

Word. I haven't really wanted to see a movie since The Departed (and even around that time, I was looking forward to 300). Sign me up, mane.

Well, I love frank millers work that I've seen. I had never heard of this one, but it's opening on my birthday, and features a nine inch nails track in the commercial. It's like I'm being drawn to it on purpose.

I wish Reno had an imax theatre.. now that would be cool..
I think I'm going to wait a week to go see it though just because everybody and their mothers are going this weekend to see it.

What is it about?
The film looks amazing, but I don't understand what's going on and I don't feel like the trailers are for anyone who doesn't already know the story :(.
There was a free preview for it last night in DC. I couldn't get in, so I saw Zodiac instead. Quite a mistake.

Lila: It's about the Battle of Thermoplyae. That should give you a better understanding of what is going.

I was invited to an exclusive bloggers only screening with the director back in February, but decided to pass. So now they have given me free tickets to the UK premiere at Leister square in London on Thursday. I can’t help but think I am too scruffy for that kind of thing.

The movie was filmed entirely inside with the exception of one scene, and I'll leave it to y'all to guess which one. To get the lush and incredibly detailed backgrounds and settings, the director went with computer graphics.
My last oolie: Another scene was shot in a huge tank of water. This was also featured in many of the trailers.

It'll be oh-so pretty, but I'm not sure there's any 'there' there.
Still, pretty will be good enough.

I, too, thought it was absolutely amazing. I wrote up a quick review once I was home from the theatre. You can find at it at http://ekonoline.com/2007/03/10/review-300/

I saw it last night. I was pumped to see it because of the gorgeous scenery, but I was disappointed with the story after watching it. I know it's meant to be an action blockbuster, but eye candy can't carry a picture alone. There still has to be some substance there. I have to admit it was very entertaining, though.
Btw, the Spartans must have gotten their hands on a copy of John Basedow's Six Pack Abs because everyone on screen was ripped.

I really can't elaborate too much... it was all just amazing. My favorite thing about Frank Miller, exhibited by both Sin City and 300, is his ability to create incredibly masculine characters. When I say masculine, I don't just mean abs and scars. I mean honor, chivalry, bravery, and respect.
Leonidus was an example of such masculinity, as were Merv and Dwight in Sin City. These kind of over-the-top cowboys are an archetype too often missing in American cinema.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Captain Jack Sparrow as much as the next person, but that's a purely entertaining character. Frank Miller's characters are just damn inspiring.
The women, too. I can't remember the last time I was as impressed by the strength of a female character as I was with that of Leonidus' queen (name escapes me). Even their relationship was inspiring.
Here's an example of something I loved about this movie (no spoilers, its mostly in the trailer)... After the Persian emissary comes to Leonidus with the threat of war (in the trailer, the guy who gets kicked into the giant pit) you can see on Leonidus' face that he has made the hard decision to go to war. But before he makes his move, he looks to his wife. She thinks about it, and nods (and he kicks the dude into the pit). That's teamwork. That's a relationship with purpose and strength. That's just one example of the kind of thing Frank Miller is so good at.
The movie was visually stunning of course, but that's to be expected from a movie today. In a world where story takes a back seat to Computer Generated Images (ie CRANK), it's incredibly refreshing to see a film in which the focus is balanced so well.
How's that for elaboration? :-)

It was fantastic as joenewbreed has described. Definitely a Man's Man type of movie. Here are some great pics comparing the graphic novel to the movie. Gives you a very good idea of how much respect the director had for Frank Miller's work.

It was a let down for me. Maybe because I worked on the website, I was somewhat prepared so wasn't as impressed.
For me the dialogue was really bad. As the film progressed, many of the soldiers and beasts looked like they were lifted from Lord of The Rings.

The dialog was really cringe inducing but the story was good and the dialog and gratuitous nudity didn't take away from it too much.
The film was beautiful though and the action was nice and satisfying. I think my favorite character was the God King (Xirces?). Someone mentioned the manly man cowboy archetype but that guy was awesome mainly because he was almost the opposite of the traditional manly man character (Leonides) but he still had many of the same characteristics. Powerful, intimidating and crazy as a fruitcake. Really quite awe inspiring.
