Eh, I only liked the ending where he bags Pamela Anderson, and the naked wrestling part, but that was purely me being in awe of such dedicated acting on Baron's part.
Otherwise, you didn't miss anything. Get a refund and possibly corrective lenses.
I got it through Netflix. So it's like getting it for free. LOL
The bagging Pam Anderson did make me laugh out loud. The naked wrestling got funny when they got into the meeting or whatever that was. But that was it. OK, so it's not just me.
The part I disliked the most was the naked wrestling scene ... though, yeah, I was impressed by his dedication as well.
But what I loved was the pure ignorance of American culture he has. That was hilarious. And he was anti ... almost everything! Anti Semitic, anti female, anti gypsy ...
The only part I REALLY laughed at was the part with the grizzly bear and the ice cream truck.
I think since I'm familiar with Borat's antics via the Ali G show, I knew what to expect so the shock value wasn't there. I felt so disappointed, because the friend I watched it with thought it was the most hysterical thing ever and I just had to see it.
I do have mad respect for Sacha Baron Cohen's ability to maintain character, because I know that I wouldn't have been able to keep a straight face. He has an incredible sense of humor.
Bruno was always my favorite character, and I read that a Bruno movie was being shopped, but since the Borat jig is up I doubt it'll work. Same reason Ali G. had to come to the States, because everyone in the UK was on to him.
I also was a regular of the Ali G Show, but I happened to think he stepped it up a notch for the movie. I thought Sasha had quite big balls for doing everything he did. The crudeness of it was what the show prepared me for, I guess. And to be honest, I was pretty much rolling on the floor just on how he got people to reveal their "greatest" moments.
A good Guardian article about the social commentary that is Borat can be found here.
@jensized: Haha, I heard that about Bruno too. Too bad. Such a great character.
Everyone who found the movie funny obviously never saw the show. On the Ali G show, Borat was amazing... the movie was so forced that it was incredible.
@jackosh: I don't think that would be the case. I happened to watch the Ali G show and still found it very funny in various parts of the movie.
I can understand that someone that has never seen Borat in action before not find it funny because it is so out-of-the-blue. But he is amazing in how he keeps character.
I saw an interview with him some time back where he said that he was playing Borat at a wine tasting event and got completely drunk and ended up passing out in the men's room. When they woke him up, he was still in character responding to Borat and acting like... welll.... like Borat!.
I rented it a while back thinking it would be funny. About half an hour in I turned it off and returned it to Rogers. It was nothing short of disgusting.
@winnopeg: I guess the crudeness of some of the scenes, it may be seen as disgusting. But to be honest, it is funny in a lot of scenes if you are open to certain types of humor.
