I don't care. Wall.E is beyond cute, and if Pixar tells a good story I'll be happy. (Anybody remember the Incredibles, and the ideas it stole - Fantastic Four, Watchmen themes, etc etc?)

Actually, you're not the only one who thinks so too. Check this out though, while Johnny 5 is the most obvious robot Wall.E took after, there are some more on the list as well.

Okay, as soon as I saw the advertisements for Wall E... I knew I'd seen a robot that looked almost IDENTICAL to a robot I'd seen once before when I was a kid (I'd forgotten that it was Johnny 5 from Short Circuit).

Anyway, after reading this small debate, I did a bit of research, and found this on Wikipedia (search "Wall E" if you want to read more info on it....)

The director also acknowledged he may have been subconsciously influenced by the film Short Circuit (which he has only seen once).[10]

So there you have it.

The director even SAID he "may have been" influenced by Johnny 5...

HOWEVER... more research ensued...

There's going to be a Short Circuit remake! Heheh..... Not sure how I feel about this information....

I can't believe how blind you guys are. The still is easy to find if you look for it.
The similarities are almost exact, except that Wall-E is a lot shorter.
I guess you didn't know that Disney stole the Lion King so now they're going to steal a movie the was made by a writer who really doesn't deserve to be slapped in the face with this one.
I sure hope that he sues their ass.
I feel sorry for those who don't see what's happening.
Disney/Pixar could have made a completely unique robot but they didn't because they're lazy.
I highly doubt that the creator of Short Circuit, Brent Maddock had sold the rights to Johnny 5.

I'm excited about this one, too. It's always a pleasure to see positive films about robots; I think there are enough that are negative about them in some way.

Wall-E does have some similar qualities to Johnny 5, but I would reckon that is either intentional, and a hat tip to the original and wonderful movie, or unintentional, but Johnny 5 was so in the minds of the creators, that it eeked out this way. It's not uncommon for influences to be obvious to everyone but the creators, who are never entirely clear where all their influences came from.

Either way, the movies will be most likely different in every way, and so I'm not worried about it. I certainly won't be thinking of Johhny 5 while watching Wall-E.

Can't wait 'til this comes out!

I think the trailer for Wall-E looks great. The similarities are a little spooky.

Thinking about it technically the only real similarity is the eyes, and getting expressive eyes from objects made with metal is a challenge so I guess logically they would be similar.

I don't care though - Short Circuit was great and I reckon Wall-E will be too.

I'm sure the look of the robot was heavily inspired by Johnny 5, the trailer doesn't contain much but standard pixar is quite excellent. I'll be looking forward to this one.
