Michael Bay's Transformers Made My Inner Child Cry

Was anyone else as disappointed in this movie as I was? As a fan (but not fanboy) of the original series, I feel Michael Bay and Co. stripped out everything that made Transformers unique and interesting, like Megatron turning into a gun or Bumblebee being a VW Bug, and replaced it with cliche and cheesy coolness.
Industrial Light & Magic did a fantastic job, but the movie was so woefully bad up until the final fight scene, and the characters so underdeveloped that by the time the Autobots started duking it out with the Decepticons I could care less who was going to win.
More here if you want to read my full take. There aren't any spoilers - just a stern warning to Transformers fans.

Being Michael Bay directing — I really didn't expect anything at all from the movie. But, as my expectations were so incredibly low, I enjoyed it.
I don't think that Megatron turning into a gun is a unique identifier for the concept — in fact, I loathed that transformation. Really useless (at least before he turned into Galvatron and the cannon in the 80's movie). Then again, my childhood experience of Transformers was entirely tied to the movie, I never watched the TV shows, so that might give me a different perspective.

FTA: Bumblebee being a VW Bug
To be fair, this was VW's doing. Bay asked for permission, but VW said "no", not even allowing the new Beetle to be a transformer. Damn shame, really.

That had to do with the fact that VW doesn't want to associate itself with guns and violence. Just to add to Gnorb's comment.

I am no Michael Bay apologist, but I really loved the movie. My inner child was squealing with delight at finally seeing giant, unbelievably-articulated robots transforming and kicking ass.
It was exactly like the first time I saw Jurassic Park as a teen, and was utterly amazed and awed by seeing dinosaurs as real as I could ever imagine them.
Maybe it's just me. I've been fascinated by robots (and dinosaurs) since I was a little kid.

I have always been trying to figure how he shrinks when transforming into the gun. I mean, he's the size of Starscream, but when he turns into a gun, he fits into's Starscream's hand. That never made sense to me. As far as not using the gun in movie, heck, Megatron hasn't been a handgun since the original animated film.
As far as the GM vehicle line up, that's possibly how he got the budget for this movie in the first place.
I haven't seen this movie yet. I did grow up watching the original cartoons and even with some bad reviews, I'm looking forward to this movie even though I'll probably have to wait for the DVD rental for budgetary reasons.

I loved this movie, aside from the fact that it was a huge GM commercial. They couldn't have made it more obvious, although I'm sure GM poured a bit of money into the movie. I'd be interested to see how much they funded.

They definitely could have made the GM and other marketing WAY more obvious, so I wasn't bothered by that so much.
Megatron turning into a gun and Bumblebee turning into a VW are such small aspects of the characters as a whole, it's more so with bumblebee but the megatron-gun idea would have made the movie atrocious. Paying attention to mass and size with regards to the transformers was one of the best decisions made for this movie, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

In the imdb faq section for this film, they said that VW would have made Bumblebee so much smaller than the rest of the Autobots. I was thinking, "Well, duh, he was much smaller in the show!"

ok my thinking is that you honestly set your ideas of how the movie should be WAY too high. looking at the track record of game/cartoon to movie adaptations you will see a huge amount of fail. the stories are never correct and character are always changed up somewhat, but this is what you should expect. its a movie, not a weekly series, so there is no real plot development of long history of a character. so for me, i got out of the movie just what i expected and then some. i think it was great. i mean honestly it wasn't perfect but, it did the job to have me amped for the 2nd and 3rd movies (yes there will be 3).
megatron's transformation was alright, maybe hhe should have turn into the galvatron style huge cannon, or super tank thing as he has become in recent versions.
and as for the the GM thing, it was my understanded that GM paid to have all their vehicles in the movie. so bumblebee had a pretty slim ass chance of being a vw bug. plus, the old school bug is no where near as ghey as the new one, how do you work into the plot that the main character owns a bug?
so while you were a couple rows back crying, i was dancing in my seat like a little monkey. and this little monkey is definitely going to see it again

Absolutely no reason to cry about this movie at all. It did the cartoons justice and more. You have to think that Michael Bay actually did something right in a movie by making our childhood heroes into Adult type heroes now. Megatron was supposed to be something fierce. Notice how they all say "Hail Lord Megatron" and then what? He's supposed to turn into a tiny gun?
Tell me you still didn't feel emotional when...
*MINOR SPOILER DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU DO NOT WANT
Bumblee got hurt at the end and you didn't know which way things would turn for him. I thought it was a great idea to allow the transformers to turn into anything they wanted to and not restricting them to one vehicle. I honestly can say that I don't see how they could have made this movie any better.

@Bartoneus: They didn't pay any attention to mass or size when the "all spark" cube transformed from a 10 story cube into a 1 foot cube, or when the little Decepticon hacker robot transformed into a tiny cell phone, so I don't see where you're seeing the attention to mass and size at all.
@ericjohnson: You're right, I shouldn't have expected much and I guess I got burned because I did, but I didn't expect that it would be this bad. The product placement was beyond tasteless. I guess my biggest complaint would have to be that the autobots weren't developed at all. In the cartoons and comics, they were MAIN characters, not supporting characters, and that's what ruined it for me. I could care less about some Geeky pervert who can't land a date, or some lip-glossed cryptographer and her government ambitions, or the square-jawed marine hunk and whatever the hell it was he was trying to do. I went to see autobots and all I got were cliche characters. Just... sad.
@Scrivs: I'm not out and out pissed about Megatron not turning into a gun, I just think that he bared absolutely no resemblance to the original Megatron OR Galvatron. It'd be the equivalent of making the Silver Surfer a Silver Skateboarder to try to appeal to a wider market. You have to agree with me that the Transformers in Bay's movie were underdeveloped on the whole. The only interaction we get to see them engage in is plucky humor scenes and fight scenes. We learn nothing about them save for a truncated narrative at the beginning of the movie.

Stegg: Frenzy (the tiny decepticon) turned into a cd player when he had his whole body and only turned into the cellphone when he was just a head. Certainly the massing looks a bit iffy, but if you really look at how his body is formed it looks like it works out pretty evenly.
One of my arguments was that, through making all of the transformers mass-to-mass relevant, when the cube folded in on itself it really felt like something mystical and special, which I believe was the intended effect. ILM spent 38 hours rendering one frame of the transformers for this movie, I imagine they thought things out pretty thoroughly.

I originally hated the new designs when they were initially leaked because they seemed to stray so far from the original. No 'boxy truck cab' Optimus Prime? Where's the trailer? Starscream is tan? Where are his red/blue/grey colors?
But you know what? I loved the movie. They were able to keep the characters true to the 'toon while with the necessities of telling an 'origin' story. Maybe you'll like Transformers: Two better! :)

I loved it. Turned out way better than I imagined any live action Transformers movie would be.
It needed more Starscream. The way he blew those jets out of the sky was awwwww yeahhhh awesome. Also laughed when Megatron says the line he says to Starscream all the time in the cartoon.
I actually think the movie made some of these characters more of what they should have been, particularly Prime and Starscream. They short-changed Megatron a little. He wasn't as menacing to me as he should have been and felt more like just another Decepticon.

It sucked (and I wanted to like it). I kept expecting Jar Jar Binks to make a cameo. If they'd just keep with the "realism" (read: like war of the worlds) of the opening scene, but noooooo. Not a total loss though, thanks to the trailer for this: http://www.1-18-08.com/

Yeah, I didn't like it either. If they go through with the Thundercats/Voltron movies I'ma seriously go to Hollywood and shoot someone.
