Although these types of Anime are usually made for girls, or at least centered around girls as main characters, there are a couple of series out there that are set apart from others.

When I finished watching Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, I thought that it was as good as it could get. I had a very sad and involving story, with excellent characters that you grew to love and hate one episode after the other.

Then I watched Nana, many years later. Perhaps it's because I look upon Anime a bit differently now, and my standards are a bit higher than before, but I found Nana to be one of the best written and drawn Animes I've ever seen. Even if it were a book, I still would have found it one of the best things ever.

Elfen Lied also has a great dramatic story, but due to the fiction that the show has, I didn't feel as "connected" to it as I did with Nana. Perhaps it's because of how similar the events that the characters go through are with the events in my life. Perhaps it's simply because it's well told.

What are your favorite dramatic Anime shows?

I will definitely have to check out Nana - from what i'm hearing it's a great anime. I actually have already read most of the manga, at least as far as what's been scanlated so I'm eager to start watching it. I'm curious to see where the anime ends as the manga is pretty long.

As for the ones you mentioned, Kimi Ga and Elfen Lied, I felt they were really dramatic in the beginning but dragged on and on through the episodes. Kimi Ga especially... it had such a great opening and then it felt like a never ending soap opera after the 2nd episode. Elfen Lied had too many memory collapses, but I can forgive it because of the wonderful character that is Lucy!

Sorry about critiquing what you said, it's just I had some opinions (just opinions, not facts hehe) about those 2 series you mentioned. As for what I think the best dramatic series are, I'd have to say:

- Grave of the Fireflies (It'd be hard to find a more touching story in my opinion)

- Berserk (There are a few scenes that literally had my jaw drop, not from action but from the drama of it all)

- Full Moon wo Sagashite (This might be a strange pick as the series is pretty jolly throughout, but anyone who has seen it should know what I'm talking about. Some parts really floored me, not necessarily because it was sad drama, but happy as well)

There are more but those ones I feel have great drama. I could mention a ton others where people cry over stuff like deaths but they didn't really hit me very hard.

  • Gantz. I'm not even sure how to describe this one, but it will mess with your mind and it gets to the point where you stop cheering anyone on because you are tired of being heartbroken.
  • Lain: Serial Experiments. Definitely not for everyone and I think Ono can speak on this one better than I could.

Too true, serial experiment lain is pretty freaky. I forget a lot of it but...ah who am I kidding I didn't understand a word of it. But it was pretty entertaining. Her parents are fake and she is part of this huge experiment???

Honey and Clover is still pretty darn good after everything is said and done. Hataraki Man is a pretty normal show that deals with uncomfortable issues. I'm watching it again in HD.

Gankutsuo, aka, the Count of Monte Cristo, had loads of well written drama. But perhaps that's not the best example of drama in anime since it was based off A. Dumas' work of the same name.

Wolf's Rain had drama. Basilisk had drama. But I don't consider either of those strictly drama. Elfen Lied was dramatic because it had so many scarring and emotional moments but I'd consider Elfen Lied a sci-fi anime.

I would almost tend to agree with Griffith that most anime dramas are directed at women since there's where the most emotion is going to be. Emotion and how people handle difficult circumstances is what drama's all about.

To that end, I think I'll stick with Gankutsuo as my vote for most dramatic anime; adaptation or not, it still rocked out the drama.

I completely forgot about Wolf's Rain. You can't get a more dramatic ending than the one it had. It's one of those forgotten classics...
