In the past year I listed Planetes as one of my favorite anime's off all time. But I also really happen to like the manga.

The anime was afterall was an adaptation of the manga but the manga also had a couple more juicy chapters that made that made the story more complete. (extra content always helps)

The Planetes manga was nice because it only had five volumes to read. Now I'm not trying to be lazy or cheap but buying a hundred Prince of Tennis is not my idea of having a good time.

Do you have any good experiences manga?

Admittedly Manga is tough to get into if you have already seen the series. Although it does offer a bit more than the Anime itself, like books to movies, its still the same premise and you aren't missing too much of the backstory. The only Manga I own are BoBoBo-BoBoBo (or something like that lol) and Cromratie High (great comedic anime).

Unlikes comic books, in many cases the manga will get turn into an anime so it makes it tough to want to own both. With that said though, Manga is well worth it if you have the patience and money to get involved in it.

used to havent for ages.... time to get some i think.

I read a ton of manga. In fact, I have cut way back on my anime watching in favor of manga. If there is a manga that I enjoy, I will watch the anime. I enjoy comparing the two versions of the story and hearing the voice actors performing the roles. Most of the time, though, I still like the manga better.

Naturally, a lot of Mangas completely blow away the anime counterparts because it was made for Manga anyway. I mean, you can't generally fit all the chapters into a standard 26 episode anime anyway.

One of the best examples where Manga completely blows away the anime is Hellsing. Watch the Anime before reading the manga, not the other way round or you'll regret it.

Funny you should mention Hellsing because the OVA just came out and its supposed to be more true to the Manga than the television series. The cut a lot of the crap out and get straight to the action.

I haven't watched the OVA yet. I do hope that it's true to the manga because the plot in the manga was a hell lot better than the anime itself. I don't mind the sideplots too cause they all relate to the final climax.

Just to throw my 5 cents in, Rurouni Kenshin (more commonly known as Samurai X in the States and in my country, unfortunately) is also another example of where a Manga exceeds the Anime.

The first season of the Anime is great, but afterwards they started making up their own storyline, separated from the Manga, and at one point it just all became ridiculous.

Thankfully they sort of made it up with the excellent OVAs like the Seisouhen one (known as Remembrance in the states). So if you were of fan of either the Anime or the Manga, I definitely recommend it.

depends what you're reading.

i think any literary work that gets translated into a tv series or movie will leave the writer with a choice of dumping 80% of the material on the cutting room floor.

if it's something multi-layered and heavily textured, you can at best try to capture the flavor of the story, but there's only so much you can do in 90 mins or stretching it at 3hours for some of hayao miyzaki's stuff.

i think for an evening's entertainment, the anime or OAV will do just fine.

but if you want to get into the skin of the series, the manga is the way to go.

my other rules of thumb is that the manga has to catch your attention in the first 5 pages (sufficient to flip through it in your local comic store).

if the first impression doesnt get you, then you probably dont want to get the entire 5 vol series...

Mangas almost always exceed the anime.

In the few exceptions where they don't have additional content (pretty rare,) they at least don't have all those horrible filler episodes written and drawn by hired staff instead of the original creators.

There's also the 1/3 and 1/3 panel spots used for advertising in the original runs that the authors often use to throw extra bits about themselves, their story, or just comment on random things.

The bulk of anime's that only run 1 or half a season are usually very abbreviated summaries, so you can get a ton more out of the manga. In some cases it's almost an entirely different story begining to end (escaflowne, Mai Hime, Utena.)

I wish anime had manga's standard of drawings. Even though they would only release one episode every one or 2 months, they would receive heaps of support, especially 'cause it would look so cool.

Oh well, the major rule when drawing anime is simplify, simplify and Simplify!

One thing I love about manga is the fact its so easy to pick, read and put down again. It's not like anime where you simple HAVE to finish off an episode after you start it..

I need to pick up the PlanetES manga the next time I actually have money, I've only heard great things about it.

Man manga seriously pwns. I love manga more than anime, and usually the manga versions of anime, if there is one, are better (from my experiences). It's also quick to download, so yeah...lol

I enjoy manga more than anime, actually. Most of the time, the little nuanced still drawings convey more emotion, and even action, than their anime counterparts. Also, the quality of art is more consistent (no rotating animation teams here!) and often, improves over the course of the series.

The Blade of the Immortal series, for example, is highly acclaimed (Eisner award-winning) and the creator claims he never wants to see the series turn into an anime... not that it matters, considering the manga manages to satisfy as-is.

Meanwhile, even for popular series, like Naruto and Bleach... I prefer the manga. :-D

I also prefer manga to anime as a whole (there are a few select series like Chevalier, Pani Poni Dash and Hunter X Hunter which exceed the original manga, but that's the exception rather than the rule). Apart from action scenes, which can be confusing in black and white stills, most series benefit from being in a format where you can take the story at your own pace, without the demands of having to be fit into n 25 minutes instalments.

Do I ever. I go to Borders to read manga so much that I practically live there. I got at least once a week and just grab myself some volumes of anything, plop myself down in a chair and read, losing all track of time. Of course, I buy a couple of series so that I can read them at home in the comforts of my own home with my own j-music blasting from near-by speakers. If only I could do this for a living, oh life would be grand.

I thought I'd pop my head into one of these anime threads to see who is talking about it. I am quite surprised to find some of the names chiming in here that are. Perhaps I'll have to look into some anime. Well, I was just looking to see if I spelled it right and it looks like anime and manga are not the same thing, so maybe I need to look into a few types.

@kar0Shi: Funny thing is that at the local Borderses (there's more than one) there are signs that say "Reading allowed for no more than 10 minutes". It used to be that a bunch of kids in the area would simply go to the store, read the stuff, and clog up their isles. They've since moved to the cafe.

I would read anime, if there is no more continuation of the anime, like in Ouran High School Host Club or Fruits Basket, so that I can actually know what will end later. Also I would read manga, because sometimes anime wouldn't even have a good adaptation of the story line. Does that make any sense?

I think manga's well worth reading because it's the original, unedited story. Especially with stories like Rurouni Kenshin and Inuyasha where the anime versions are crippled with filler, I find the manga infinitely more appealing. RK and Inu both could have been great if they had just waited for their mangas to catch up instead of making up filler garbage, like Seisouhen.

Hey what happened to Inuyasha anyway? Isn't it still running in Japan? There was a site that kept up with the scanlations but I stopped going there after a while.

I read a lot of manga. I sometimes like reading better than watching anime.

No. Sunrise decided to end the Inuyasha anime prematurely.
