This is the top 50 list (in alphabetical order) according to a UK documentary made in 2006 and recently aired on Channel 4

I think they've left out some major gems notably some Taiwanese and South Korean films as well as the 2 Japanese masters Kurosawa and Ozu but worst of all they forgot Tarkovsky and Eisentein and Charlie Chaplin...I guess that would be for the top 100 films.

Would it not be more useful in the order they appear in the top 50?

I've seen 30 of those. A lot don't belong though and there are some missing, in my opinion. These lists are entirely subjective I think, it's kind of pointless.

Sorry dude, can't edit notes.

If Mike, Colin or Scrivs sees this: consider it a feature request. ;)

Well that's what this post was, a feature request masquerading as an interesting note :)

Can't believe they included Princess Mononoke over Kurosawa's samurai classics. It's a great anime film but nowhere near a classic, I especially love Kurosawa's Seven Samurai and Ran.

Good list. Nice to see Manhunter and The King of Comedy there. Lists are always fun for some debate but as Rich said they're always subjective, which is why they're fun I suppose. Guess the Ten Commandments isn't subjective but then it's not that fun because you can't debate them. Like you can't argue Thou Shall Not Publicly Argue On The Cell Phone was an oversight. I like the Ten C's they're just not fluid like a good movie list.

This one suffers from the lack of Kurosawa. Oh, and Pearl Harbor. How could they leave off Pearl Harbor?

You have to pick Mononoke due to the awards and it being the first real big anime to hit it big in U.S. theaters. But I agree, there are much better animes out there.

I'm surprised that "The Pianist" wasn't on the list. Should be.

Go Fight Club! Chuck Palahniuk is that dude.

But no Godfather? Chris is sad.

Oh yeah, the Godfather was left out too! The first two, in fact the whole trilogy, deserve to be on any list.

What? No Citizen Kane? No Memento?

These people don't watch many movies do they?

This isn't the best films ever list. It's a list of films you should see - they're not saying the films are good but that they define genres. I believe (I didn't actually watch the show so could be wrong) that the films were listed in categories, so the Godfather was left out in favour of Scarface.

I've only seen 17 of them but there are a few on there that I'd like to see.

As for additions... I agree that Memento should be there and think Old Boy, and Amelie should be added in also.

BTW Scrivs has already said note editing is on the todo list :)

i hate donnie darko. I watched while falling asleep so maybe that explains why I didn't 'get it'.

I love Al Pacino, Scarface is an absolute classic too! There's never enough space on these lists.

Tony Montana: "Say hello to my little friend!"

The Godfather is missing. Boo.

Anyone else think The Shawshank Redemption is just a TAD overrated?

No, I think Shawshank Redemption was great. I thought it was an underdog movie to begin with that's why I liked it even more. I must have watched it like 10-15 times and each time I watch it, it feels like it's the first time I'm watching it again.

The Shawshank Redemption is good stuff. I've seen it multiple times and recently forced my girlfriend to watch it, haha.

oh its definitely a great movie, I just dont know if I agree with all the hype. Maybe I should watch it again.

Your film seems a bit testosterone-laden??? Any particular reason?
