For the past year I've been on a mission to discover new music, artists, bands, and songs that would broaden my music spectrum. I've found a lot of great new artists and bands this way and have fallen in love with music all over again.
I've used Virb, MySpace, and Pure Volume to find new stuff, and so far they've proven to be great tools in my search. Through them I've find bands like Bishop Allen and The Oaks. I've also discovered John Vanderslice. I've been paying close attention to news magazines from Cleveland and I've discovered Driver Side Impact. And speaking of little known...you should all check out Guster. They've been around for awhile now (since I was in 8th grade) and they are my favorite band.
What about you? Do you have any hardly known bands or artists?

Lost Anyway is pretty awesome.
As for finding new bands/music - I do that by listening to different genres. Pandora works for that but so does listening to other people's music on the local iTunes network.

I'd love to answer this question, but first I think there would need to be some clarification on what determines if a band is well known or not. The internet is kind of like word of mouth on steroids, so it's hard to figure out if you've actually just discovered something new or have really been under a rock and missed out on a big thing.

I just found John Vanderslice too! Pixel Revolt is fantastic and I'm currently obsessed with Exodus Damage.
One of my favorite bands that never quite caught on is Glitter Mini 9, who broke up a few years ago. They did this kind of angsty, dirty girl rock that was just WOW, awesome. A couple free mp3s here.

Well, I'm not hidden under a rock :) I used to hate radio, but as I discovered some new radio stations once I left the small town, I listen to it all the time. I use a variety of different stations, different genres, etc. to help me find new music in new genres and expand my musical horizon.
I also check out MTV on occasion but I can't stand all that bubble-gum crap that's playing on it now. I check out Fuse as well and some other music tv channels.
I scour the internet looking for music sites, blogs, artists, bands, and anything I can find. I look at the billboard new releases every week and also their charts to see if there's anything worth listening to.
So, to put it simply, the little known bands would be the ones that don't get all the hype in mainstream media. The internet is almost mainstream media, but I'll count it as mainstream when my dad figures out the CNN has a website and not just a tv channel. :)

ditto to the above... It's hard to know what you think of as being little known.
I personally found bands like cocorosie, devendra banhardt, joanne newsom, Akron/family, little wings and tapes n tapes via the internet and seem to like them. :)

I went to a festival in my town yesterday that some awesome bands played at. They're all either so unknown or local though, so it's impossible to find music by them.
They all have MySpace though, obviously.
GoodBooks
SixNationState -- These guys were awesome.
My Luminaries
FortyFives -- These guys are all between 15 and 17 and the BBC are already talking them up.
The Matadors -- Had good reviews and play time from NME, MTV2 and Radio 1.
The Screenbeats -- One of my favourite bands of the day, lots of air play on XFM.
The full band list is on the festical page.
