Some people listen to the radio to find new music, some read sites like Pitchfork or the Gothamist. Others go by their friends. My question is, how do YOU find new music?

I find music via friends, the internet, going to concerts with some new opening band... but the best place I've found new music is random hole in the wall music stores. Just start looking through the CD's, records and tape.

I usually use this private bit torrent site called Oink to find music. It's the best thing I've ever used for getting music since Napster.

I find new music by actually going to music stores. I spend a fair bit of time looking through my locals: HMV, Sanity and Leading Edge.

All traditional ways of course, like friends, TV, movies, the pub, but often I will check out last.fm too. I've been compiling charts for about eight months now, and their 'musical neighbours' thing has become quite good.

By the way, I haven't listened to the radio in over a year, so I won't get anything from there anymore.

I can't stand the radio. I very rarely listen to it...........it's full of junk to me.

I hate radio because it usually streams compressed music. The sound quality sucks.

I get my new music or recommendations from forums, for example the Organissimo.org forums (jazz) and the Steve Hoffman Music forums (focusing on "oldies" [not only] and sound quality, meaning good mastering vs. bad mastering). These forums have helped me avoid crummy remasters/reissues and have opened my eyes in regard to mastering quality.

Interesting. I agree that the radio pretty much sucks. There's only one station I listen to in Atlanta called Dave FM. I like it because they play lots of unheard of bands.

I prefer to not just go to the music store and buy an album based on its cover art, I'm not sure if anyone does that but I prefer to listen to the band before I buy.

Message boards, websites, internet radio, discussion forums.

Browse CD Baby.com or other online stores that offer soundclips.

Radio and TV are dead mediums for music and MySpace is a waste of time. I still find some old "mom & pop" record shops to be helpful in discovering new music.

The cool thing about those mom & pop stores is they are typically owned by folks who are absolutely passionate about their music. You can walk in there, tell them some bands you like already and that you're looking for new music. More likely than not they'll point you to something you've never heard but will love.

Lol, it used to broadcast in wonderful stereo electromagnetic radiation. That's what I meant, sorta. But yes, web radio, though ad and chat free, isn't always great quality. Fully agree.

i always listen to the radio. not only local radio but online streams of other radio stations out of state, then torrent the best of cds of those bands that i like, ha

Usually previewing stuff off iTunes.

@Napfisk What I meant (and I'm not sure if we mean the same thing) is that today most commercial radio stations (not web radio) play compressed, maximised or otherwise modified music or, worse, that many labels produce that kind of compressed, overly-eq'd and altogether lifeless music to make it radio and charts compatible.

I would even wager a guess that many people today don't even know anymore what a well-recorded CD can/could sound like because 95% of what they have all sounds the same (in regard to sonic quality).

Yeah, most (if not all) of the radio stations in the Atlanta area play mp3s.

Sirius radio in my ride.

I use internet radio, mates recommendations (lucky to have some music obsessed mates and husband to help me out) and also itunes store I like to wander through. Sometimes if it's a what is coming / what is out and not a listen then I have a look at the amazon list.

Just check out peoples profiles on MySpace. so many of them have songs i've never heard of and for the most part, I like them all.

Purevolume.com is the essential site to visit when searching for new music.

I find new music on the iTunes Music Store. I just go through the songs that are currently in my library and see what the similar artists are. Sometimes it's an interesting find, and sometimes it's not. I believe there's a "just for you" section of the iTunes Music Store that recommends songs based about your current colletion.

I BitTorrent live shows from EZ-Torrent. It's legal (unlike other BitTorrenting), and it gives me a great overview of an artist's work. Although I really have to watch out for the whole 'great live but terrible in the studio' thing.
