Either Voltron, Ronin Warriors, or the movie Venus Wars. Can't remember which one was really first, most likely it was Voltron.

Tenchi Muyo was one of the early ones that I watched when I really started to get into the anime.

People call 'em vampires because that's what they're compared to in the novel; it's credited as being the first modern vampire story.

None of that changes the fact that, in the movie (which is what most of us are referring to when saying they're not vampires) they lack pretty much all characteristics of vampires EXCEPT for their UV sensitivity. The movie is different from the book though, and I'm intrigued to hear that they were more like vampires in the novel. I may have to read it soon.

Except when the marine sergeant lady smashed her head into the metal bar blocking off the fire area, she was bleeding from the head the whole eliminator and STILL almost won. (she probably would have if she didn't swim right into the pole)

(-that's what she said.)

Wow! Where did all the water come from? Did someone pitch the idea of an aquatic American Gladiators? And will this lead to other water-based shows?

Man, you're right, Waterworld was an awesome movie.

I like the water because for many of the events it makes it more epic when they fall, instead of just flopping onto some padded mats. By this logic, however, molten lava would probably work better in addition to being more true to the word "gladiator".

» I Am Legend *Spoilers!*  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by Bartoneus.

On a side note I think that if some zombie disease did spread across the earth, Will Smith would still be the only person left.

and Chuck Norris.

Ditto to everything in Gnorb's comment.

That's actually funny lyteforce, because the guy who plays Titan was a reserve Gladiator for the last two seasons of the original show so he was definitely waiting for it to come back!

Kami:

I'm beginning to think that the movie is giving a different kind of atmosphere (aside from the obvious Hollywood bastardization)

The movie actually avoids a lot of standard Hollywood tropes, so in that sense I think you should be pleased.

ChrisA:

Another concern is the resolution in the movie. They have the cure but how will they use it? Will they be developing bullet injections of the cure. Also, how are they to duplicate it? Perhaps I missed something.

The movie actually makes you think about a lot of things, instead of just telling you everything flat out. The infected society is very strongly hinted at in the movie, but never even addressed by Neville despite being a scientist. I inferred that he'd been living alone and running from them for so long that he had mentally ruled out any possibility of them not being totally primitive.

Will Smith acted very well, and there were a few parts where you get clues that Neville has built himself up as the last hope for humankind, even though there are chances that others have survived too. Even after he meets others, he doesn't want to leave NYC because to him that's ground zero and the only way for him to fix everything. In his mind, he's made the infected out to be pure bad guys, even though the movie really starts to show you they may not be. Hollywood has gotten to the point where a big sign would come up 3/4 of the way through that says "they aren't bad guys love them now", but instead this movie continued viewing through Neville's psychosis and he ignores any signs to the contrary.

» I Am Legend *Spoilers!*  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by Bartoneus.

Erin: 28 Days Later was based on the book I Am Legend?

Gnorb: They very briefly tried to explain the remaning humans being in Vermont because the virus supposedly couldn't survive the cold temperatures. Not sure if that makes medical students cringe or not, I'll have to find out...

Since there always has to be an uber-nerd that points things like this out, technically they weren't vampires just infected (hairless, seemingly primitive) human beings with a sensitivity to light. Really no more like a vampire then any nocturnal animal is.

I thought the movie was pretty damn good because of the emotion it invoked, and because it was shorter rather than wasting time and stalling.

I Am Legend mixed too many things together and excuse me for saying it, but the death of the dog was absolutely unnecessary and it was at that point that I began to hate the movie.

I'd love to hear a good argument for why they shouldn't have killed the dog, it was perhaps one of the most effective moments of the movie (and true to the novel also, I believe).

» Publisher of Choice?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by themikehaynes.

There are definitely titles at both Marvel and DC which are great, but they also each have their servings of crap. The fact that these companies still have editors just boggles my mind, but I'd definitely say Marvel goes a lot more for the approach of "publish more" rather than publishing quality. They flood the market with x-men books just trying for a number of sales between them all rather then trying to get one book that sells that many.

That said, I love spiderman, the x-men, and tons of marvel properties as well as tons of DC properties, it all depends on the writer/artist combo and if it produces something worth-while.

My answer to the question: even on all counts.

American Gladiators: Awesome.

Humor Community — Posted: Jan. 7, 2008  ...   Last By: Bartoneus @ 12 months ago

Last night the new version of American Gladiators premiered on NBC, in anticipation of the hilarity my wife and I gathered several friends and watched both episodes. It was probably the best two hours of television we've ever seen, and definitely a great start to 2008 despite the writer's strike.

Yea, sure, it can be considered stupid and mindless but my god is it hilarious. Within the first 20 minutes one contestant and one gladiator were out due to injury, and none of the contestants looked like they were even going to be able to finish the eliminator. The new gladiators they've gotten for the show are a riot, especially the aptly named Wolf (covered in hair), and The Rock's cousin nicknamed Toa had a great tiki dance to intimidate his opponents.

Hulk Hogan grew to be annoying, but Laila Ali was an excellent host and seemed to enjoy being there. They've definitely chosen some great people to compete, including a female marine sergeant and a NYC firefighter, but no matter how tough they are the gladiators seem to have a good chance of kicking some ass. The new set design seems to be a good blend of the classic show (1989-1996) and present day, and thankfully many of the best events are still in the show. In many places they have replaced a pit full of mats with a pool of water, which I imagine adds a lot more time between events but certianly adds an increased sense of excitement.

Overall the show was very entertaining, I imagine if you have no connection or interest in the original you probably won't care too much about the new show, but considering the popularity of shows like Ninja Warrior I can see this new version of American Gladiators gaining a huge fanbase.

I don't know if it technically classifies as a "graphic novel", but the trades collecting Batman - Hush are very good.

Used to be into Mindless Self Indulgence (way too much cussing for radio), but I probably out grew or out matured it at some point.

Still, and always, They Might Be Giants.

» Frank Miller  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by R_U_Pickman.

The entirety of Sin City really evens out, there are some parts (mostly what was put into the first movie that are fantastic pieces and probably some of the best comics I've read, but there are other parts that just make you wonder what the heck is going on. 300 as a graphic novel is iffy for me, I really enjoyed the movie because of the situational humor, what I consider to be some of the best done action scenes in a movie yet, the pure adherence to historical fact (sarcasm - ie - I like that it's not purely historical but makes me feel like I'm watching something mythological), I think visually it was amazingly beautiful, and really it just struck all the right cords with me, my wife, and pretty much all of my friends.

The Graphic Novel of 300 to me really best served to create a good movie, as a comic I like the coloring but the art and storytelling leave some to be desired. Frank Miller's other works really just fill a good niche that I don't think anyone else attempts to fill, he takes a lot of risks and like with Allstar Batman & Robin it falls flat on its face bordering on downright histerics, but with things like Sin City it came out better from it. Oh also he had a lot to do with the Robocop movies, all 3 of them, which you can interpret as a good or a bad thing...

Some good trivia I have for Frank Miller is that he was born relatively close to where I grew up in Maryland.

RyanArrowsmith: I suppose the point of contention is that the "witches" are good in HP, and not in Narnia. But I agree with you 100% about it, if you would let them read Narnia then the argument is invalid.

Who's to say what details do matter?

In the context of Harry Potter, I think (because I could easily be proven wrong, so please do) that you could argue if something is important it would be in the books. As I said, there may easily be an example of such, but if Dumbledore being gay is an important part of the story then no doubt it would be a part of the books.

I honestly think she's just doing this to get back into the hype a bit, which I can understand since everyone was talking about her at one point but now the only new thing will be the movies which are arguably someone else's baby.

» So Yeah Dumbledore is Gay  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Karura.

Ditto to what jensized said.

» So Yeah Dumbledore is Gay  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Karura.

I would say some people are uppity about it simply because it is a piece of information that doesn't matter. Why she bothered disclosing it at all if it wasn't revealed within the books?

It's the idea that the books should communicate everything that is important about the character and I suppose some people either view this as important to the character or that if it wasn't mentioned it's not true.

One I haven't seen mentioned yet: Little Monsters!

Woot Fred Savage and Ben Savage in the same movie!!!

Oh and as a kid I loved Time Bandits JUST because of the cover.

Primer

- though it's very recent, still a lot of people haven't seen it and it is easily one of my favorite movies. Particularly good considering the budget and concept of the whole thing.

Big Trouble in Little China on DVD, just watched it a week or two ago with a bunch of friends. Man that took me back.

I'm pretty sure The Neverending Story was well known and widespread.

-The Wizard
-Surf Ninjas (not that old, but hilarious/bad!)
-The Wrong Guys
-Dune (the 80's movie version, with Patrick Stewart)

Don't forget about the fact that we're being 'educated' on this topic by the people who are currently using the most energy and resources per-person on the entire planet. If you're looking at the so called carbon footprint the avg. person is around 5-7 and Madonna is well above 1,000 on her own.

We should be having a concert where we educate THEM about how to live more conservatively.

I find frequently that a lot of people, if not everyone, who says they never gossip, talk about people behind their backs, etc. just don't know it when they're doing it. It's one thing to say you never do something, it's another to say you hate it even when you're the one doing it.

As far as the internet, Mike said it perfectly.

LOL yes we definitely miss Adam West. The key phrase there being that we miss the man, not the Batman. Mainly because that was hardly any part Batman and almost entirely West himself. :)

» The Joker Revealed and OMG...  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by seopher.

His core character is that he's essentially a clown whose jokes aren't funny - they're deadly.

If you factor in the fact that he is psychotic, that helps with the new image a bit. Not just a clown who does deadly jokes, an INSANE clown that does deadly jokes.

Stegg: Frenzy (the tiny decepticon) turned into a cd player when he had his whole body and only turned into the cellphone when he was just a head. Certainly the massing looks a bit iffy, but if you really look at how his body is formed it looks like it works out pretty evenly.

One of my arguments was that, through making all of the transformers mass-to-mass relevant, when the cube folded in on itself it really felt like something mystical and special, which I believe was the intended effect. ILM spent 38 hours rendering one frame of the transformers for this movie, I imagine they thought things out pretty thoroughly.

» Michael Bay's Transformers Made My Inner Child Cry  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Tony.

They definitely could have made the GM and other marketing WAY more obvious, so I wasn't bothered by that so much.

Megatron turning into a gun and Bumblebee turning into a VW are such small aspects of the characters as a whole, it's more so with bumblebee but the megatron-gun idea would have made the movie atrocious. Paying attention to mass and size with regards to the transformers was one of the best decisions made for this movie, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Golden and Silver Age Comics?

Comics Community — Posted: Jun. 27, 2007  ...   Last By: Bartoneus @ 1 year ago

I spent a fair amount of time two weeks ago searching around the internet looking for a list or record of exactly what sizes Golden Age comics used to be, how many pages of actual art there was and how many ads there were in them. Not to mention the prices they were sold for. I looked for Silver Age also, and I was surprised when I came up pretty much empty handed.

Does anyone know this information off hand, or know of a place to find it?

I haven't bought any comics since last November when I finally became fed up with paying 3 dollars for 22 pages of 7x10 art when every other page is an advertisement. I'm sticking to trade paperbacks nowadays, and so far all of them have been borrowed from friends.

I'm sure the look of the robot was heavily inspired by Johnny 5, the trailer doesn't contain much but standard pixar is quite excellent. I'll be looking forward to this one.

You'd much rather him be a GIANT GUY IN A PURPLE SUIT? I suppose someone like Nolan or Singer could pull that off...but Tim Story showed us with the first FF movie that he likes to play it safer and take less risks. I very much enjoyed the first one, for the reasons I just stated, they didn't go out on any limbs or risk anything to make the movie terrible...it falls a bit flat because of that in some places, but I really enjoyed watching it.

From the reviews I've read, if you didn't like the first you probably won't like the second. Why the hell is this one only an hour and half long?!

Gargoyles and The Tick too! Oh man, I'm definitely going to have to go with the 90's, I loved the 80's ones, but I think the 90's quality just built up from there.

Oh man, Bucky O'Hare? I completely forgot about that. And it seems Darkwing Duck and Ducktales are no-where to be seen?

Scrivs: I don't know, I mean certainly I agree with you on many levels, but Batman:TAS is possibly one of the greatest cartoons ever created.

This season definitely slowed down in the middle, and the move to 10pm put some people off from it. This is really a shame because right after some people stopped watching it picked back up and started impressing me again. It also seemed to help when Brian K. Vaughn came on as executive story editor and wrote an episode or two.

Too bad we have to wait until January/February for Season 4!
