Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios has launched a download service with high-end British speaker manufacturer Bowers & Wilkins. It's called the B&W Music Club...
...the sort of narrative that could be written about any beloved indie-music haven these days: it's a quirky anachronism in a world that really doesn't need it anymore...
I've been a Devo fan for many years and recently have been looking for the types of instruments they used on certain tracks. In my search I came across this interview. It's from 2005 but it's very cool. DEVO ROCKS!
BLVR: Do you think the internet and all the cheap, available technology of today has helped create a world that is closer to what you were hoping for back then?
MM: Maybe so. Because today, if a record company collapsed, who the hell would be losing, except the people who were out of jobs? Consumers aren’t going to be losers. And if you’re in music just to become a big, fat rock star, then I probably don’t like your music to begin with. It’s people who write music because they are obsessed that I like; because they have something to say and no other way to say it. And if you get rid of a lot of the poseurs by destroying record companies, maybe it’s a good trade-off.
@Deuse - HELL YEAH!
@Sara - Thanks for the tip. I like the album!
Elvis Costello ~ Oliver's Army
The list is too long but here are my most favored favorites. It all depends on my mood really.
Motley Crue ~ Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)
Motley Crue ~ Kickstart My Heart
Sham 69 ~ Borstal Breakout
Sum41 ~ Fat Lip
Sum41 ~ Motivation
Green Day ~ American Idiot
My Chemical Romance ~ Teenagers
Addendum: I must add Rage Against The Machine ~ Guerrilla Radio
I'm sure there's more I can't think of right now.
A stark truth facing any aspiring digital music service these days is that working with record labels is going to carry a hefty price.
This is an Op Ed piece written by Billy Bragg about the rights of the musician in the age of social network sites featuring music.
...Trent Reznor has made no secret of how the Nine Inch Nails album Ghosts I-IV has sold. According to the band, 800,000 transactions generated...
You'll have to read it to believe it.
@Peroty I agree whole heartedly.
I believe in supporting the artist. The Record Co.? Not so much.
Agreed. AndyDickTracyMorganFreeman
"Sadly, 21st century audio technology has mostly been used to create ever cheaper and crappier audio--witness the boom of computer/PC and iPod speakers--but they're all laughably pitiful..."
Good ones.
@jen: They play the HighDive. I know the sound guy there. I'm going to have to check them out live.
Agreed.
Tangerine Speedo! Holy crap that's funny.
@Jenisized: I agree people seem kind of confused. Those names are great. My brain is still reeling under the weight of Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza.
Surely SOMEONE must go to see live bands play. Any other names that make you laugh? Cry? Weep for the youth of today?

Sometimes I figure out that it's just ONE button that I haven't pushed. I push it and everything works.
Sometimes I quote.
Sometimes I note.
Sometimes I clip.
Sometimes I don't.
Not your typical home theater system. As a matter of fact, it's a bit of overkill. It's amazing but it's over the top.
Okay, I just watched the second video... that dude's right on the money. She needs to disappear for a very long time. She needs to move to Wyoming or something. Become a farmer for awhile and let all this crap blow over.
I like it, Britney the Farmer.
I couldn't even finish the first video. It's sad really how people can get so bent out of shape over some celebrity.
I don't care if Britney's fat, thin, bald, whatever. I DO wish she'd just go away. I won't hold my breath though. The tabloids/celeb-rags (AKA those people that purchase that drivel) are keeping her "star" alive.
*EDIT
This comment had a video in it but I wasn't sure if it was MY video that made the page look all funny or if it was the YouTube video. After removing mine, I can see that it WASN'T mine.
:-)
"Pump Action Retards" it's beautiful!
These are all good. :-) But... "Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza" WOW!
I've got to give honorable mention to "Yo Momma's Big Fat Booty Band". It just makes me smile.

Here's something that's been plaguing me for some time. Perhaps I should put this in a separate note, but I've been wondering. What makes a recording that's LoFi more "real" that something that's well produced? I have a wide ranging taste so I'm okay with LoFi, in some cases, but I MUCH prefer clean, full spectrum recordings. I want my studio tricks to be as invisible as possible.
It just seems like the idea of a more "real" recording falls along the same lines as "selling out". It's a nebulous concept that really only holds meaning to the person that says it, rather than having any actual meaning.
Okay, rant over.
Now back to the music. :-)
